7 Apr 1874 - I am clear of mind today. I rode the train for a brief ride north as far as Saint Peter and took a coach into town to take in the sights. I browsed through many of the shops and manufactories. The Square is a large and delightful open space and I found much solace there. I made my way to the North Western in the afternoon, just a short walk from the Square, and arranged my lodging for the night.

That evening, in the dining room, a young, rather well-dressed Sioux man pensively approached me as I sat alone at my table and quietly spoke the words “Terra Nova” so as only I could hear them. I stood to greet the man and we locked eyes as we shook hands. With a firm grip, he introduced himself as “Ta-Koda”. I gestured for him to sit opposite me.

I sensed from others in the dining room that this gentleman may not have been welcomed here, and possibly by association, me as well. I would not let this deter me. Nor would Ta-Koda. We both began to sip a bourbon and he granted permission for me to transcribe his words.
